Excel - Building a Dashboard-Based Reporting Tool

No matter what business you are in, a dashboard is a critical tool in your communication armoury and as with any communication tool, presentation is everything. Although there are many tools that can be used to create a dashboard, Excel is commonly used due to it’s power, it’s flexibility and the fact that most people have it installed on their computer.

This training focuses on what you need to know to create an interactive professional-looking dashboard using Excel. You'll learn how to: make the dashboard maintenance-free when new data becomes available; create the pivot tables needed to drive the dashboard; create great looking visuals; add interactivity using slicers; automate elements of the dashboard with a macro and protect the cells containing critical formulas.

Employee Engagement: Keeping Your Workforce Motivated to Improve Results

Do your employees jump out of bed each morning excited to come to work? When they’re at work are they totally absorbed in what they’re doing? According to a ton of research, the answer is, unfortunately, “probably not.”

Employee engagement is about building an environment where employees are fully absorbed by their work, enthusiastic about achieving their goals, and consistently take action to further the organization.  A fully engaged employee is willing to go the extra mile because she cares about the organization’s well-being. He puts his entire mind, body and soul into work when he’s on the clock.

So if you have employees who work hard or put in long hours, can you say they are engaged? Not necessarily. Plenty of people hate their jobs but work long hours because they think they have to in order to receive a paycheck. If people don’t like their jobs they are peddling the wheels to get by, but they aren’t taking your organization to the next level.

Engaged employees work hard, but they are also satisfied with their jobs and experience high levels of morale, commitment, motivation, and loyalty. In turn, your organization experiences high levels of retention, productivity, innovation, attendance, customer satisfaction, and a good reputation. It’s safe to say that organizations who focus on engagement are probably outperforming competitors who don’t.

So how do you know if employees are engaged, and what they need to become engaged if they aren’t?

Excel - Creating High Impact Business Reports

No matter what business you are in, a report is a critical tool in your communication armoury. As with any communication tool, presentation is everything.  Get it right and it offers the reader (typically a CEO, shareholder or Project Manager) a valuable insight into the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) upon which a business or project is measured.  Get it wrong and you'll end up with something that nobody understands and nobody wants to read.

The training will focus on 4 areas - Pivot tables, charts/graphs, the Power View report addin and how to present geographic information.

In the pivot tables section, you'll learn how to create a basic pivot table, display numbers as a percentage (no formulas, arithmetic or programming required!), make the pivot table eye-catchingly appealing to read and then group the data (by month or numeric range).

In the visual communication (charts/graphs) section, you'll learn how to enhance and customize a standard chart ("from drab to fab") as well as how to create infographic-style charts using nothing but Excel.

With Excel's Power View addin (2013 and 2016 only) you'll learn how to create visual reports containing interactive charts, graphs, maps, and other visuals that bring your data to life.

The final part of the training will focus on Excel's Power Map tool (2013 and 2016 only) which lets you plot geographic (country, region, state etc) data on an interactive 3-D globe or custom map.

Best Practice: Protecting You and Your Business from Harassment Claims by Creating a Positive Work Culture

SHRM CEO's recent testimony at the CA legislature echoed what the EEOC said in 2016 - culture is the key to harassment prevention, and in fact culture trumps compliance. So your training allows you to check the compliance box, but why are you stopping there? Your best defense is creating a positive culture that leaves no room for harassment, because speaking up is comfortable. That is, your best defense is inviting employees to resolve the issue internally.

NEWS FLASH: Businesses who allow legal, negative behaviors to happen (e.g., bullying) are inviting employees to tell an attorney when illegal harassment happens. Employees can see behavior and culture are irrelevant to management, so why speak up? Stop inviting your employees to keep silent on harassment, and start helping them thrive. As SHRM's Taylor says, "With a healthy workplace culture, when sexual harassment is observed or experienced, the community takes over and shuts it down collectively, with a message that this behavior will not be tolerated here, by anyone at any level."

Intricacies of the Fair Labor Standards Act

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), commonly referred to as the Wage and Hour Act, was passed in 1938 and since then has been amended many times.  The major provisions of the FLSA are concerned with minimum wage rates and overtime payments, child labor, and equal rights.  The US Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division, oversees federal labor laws.  Additionally, State DOLs administer state labor laws.  Failure to comply with Wage & Hour laws may result in the employer paying the employee back wages, damages, penalties, attorney fees and court costs, plus the prospect of civil and criminal penalties from federal and/or state governments.  Therefore, Wage & Hour compliance is of the utmost importance.
